NORMAL, Ill. – It is truly starting to look like football season inside Hancock Stadium as the Redbirds practiced in full pads Wednesday morning for the first time.
Wednesday's workout was the sixth practice of fall camp and even with a one-hour weather delay in the middle of practice, the 'Birds were able to fit in two 7-on-7 sessions, special teams drills, and a team session focused on end zone work.
Practice Highlights:
• To try and stay ahead of the impending inclement weather, the first 7-on-7 period quickly followed the special teams circuit.
• In the first 7-on-7 session, Bryce Jefferson and Jackson Waring alternated snaps on the first/second team side … Jefferson was 5-for-7, connecting with tight end Bryson Deming twice as well as Kacper Rutkiewicz and Mitchell Lewis … Joey Lombardi and Treshawn Watson both had two catches apiece from Waring who went 6-for-7 … Jacob Carl and Micah Jones also each had a catch from Waring … senior defensive back Jarrell Jackson had an interception in the first session.
• On the other side of the field, Timothy Dorsey and Tommy Rittenhouse took snaps for the third/fourth team … four different players caught balls from Dorsey including Melvin Pettis, Sean Allen, Jarel Miller, and J'Kalon Carter … Rittenhouse was 4-for-4, also connecting with Allen and Pettis out of the backfield … Daniel Sobkowicz and Scotty Presson also caught passes from Rittenhouse during the drill.
• The first team session followed the first 7-on-7 … For the first session, the offense was tasked with working its way out of its own end zone, and get two first downs, by starting a drive on the 2-yard line while the defense tried to prevent a first down … On the first series, Nigel White posted an 8-yard run for a first down to move the chains and Tanner Taula collected a 9-yard catch from Jefferson, but the offense lost five yards on the next play as Kenton Wilhoit had a tackle-for-loss and the drive stalled… Waring found Jalen Carr in the drill for a 14-yard pass and first down on the second drive as well.
• As the Redbirds finished the first team session, the weather sent the team to the locker room for a one-hour delay, before they were given the all clear to return to the field and continued practiced in the rain.
• As the slight drizzle turned to downpour, the second 7-on-7 session began … Jefferson was 7-for-8 and Britton Morris was 6-for-8 on the first/second team side … On the third/fourth team side of the field, Rittenhouse was able to connect with Carter twice in the second session, while Dorsey went deep to Miller for a touchdown.
• The second team session followed and this time it was the offense's turn to try to punch it into the endzone … each drive started on the 4-yard line and on the first two attempts, the defense prevailed as Jacob Powell had a fumble recovery to end the first drive and Michael Gomez, Julian Haynie, and Braydon Deming combined to stop the ball-carrier on a fourth-down conversion attempt the second time around … Wenkers Wright and Cole Mueller were able to power through the defense for touchdowns on the next two drives … Britton Morris then found Rashad Lampkin through the air for a touchdown and Rittenhouse connected with Presson for another in the corner of the endzone to end practice on a high note for the offense.
