ELKINS — The 17th annual National Kids Day event scheduled for tSaturday at the Phil Gainer Community Center has been postponed due to rising COVID-19 cases in Randolph County.

“The Family Resource Board of Directors have decided to postpone National Kids Day until further notice,” Gillian Adams, Randolph County FRN director, said Wednesday. “I want to thank those who agreed to set up at our event, to those who donated, and to those who came to Applebee’s yesterday for our fundraiser. I hope to see everyone soon when we reschedule.”

Adams said the FRN will have more details on a rescheduled day and time for the event at a later date.

The annual event provides an opportunity for every local parent and grandparent to take a break and spend a fun-filled evening with their children. The event was set to feature carnival games, inflatable obstacle courses, race cars, crafts, door prizes, free giveaways, treats and much more.

“I fully support this decision by the Randolph County Family Resource Network to postpone National Kids Day,” Chris Lee, Phil Gainer Community Center manager, told The Inter-Mountain Wednesday. “These are complicated times, and with the spike in COVID cases that we are currently experiencing within Randolph County, I respect their decision to opt on the side of caution in an effort to protect the youth in our community who are not old enough to be vaccinated.”

Local coronavirus cases have been skyrocketing in Randolph County in recent weeks. On July 12 there were zero active cases in the county. The Elkins-Randolph County Health Department reported 100 active cases on Wednesday.

When asked if the rise in coronavirus numbers would affect anything else upcoming at the Phil Gainer Center, Lee replied, “We are carefully observing COVID numbers and their potential effect on upcoming rentals and our in-house programming. The safety and wellness of those in our community is always the number one priority.”

Lee said the Phil Gainer Center is still accepting rentals and will continue to honor the events that are booked at the center, with the caveat that those using the facility are in-line with health guidelines provided by the CDC and governor’s office.
