With Christmas just a few days away, Ohio set its all-time record for most COVID-19 cases reported in day with 12,502 on Tuesday.

The number is particularly unnerving with people planning to get together for the holidays. The state and the country are continuing to see the impact from the delta variant largely among the unvaccinated while the omicron variant is emerging in just the past week.

Ohio has seen a significant increase in COVID-19 cases since the start of this month — considerably more than at any time since a spike from the delta variant started in August.

The state’s daily average for the past 21 days is 8,453. It was 3,747 on Sept. 1. It was 788 on Aug. 2.

The 12,502 COVID-19 cases reported Tuesday broke the previous single-day record of 11,885 on Nov. 23, 2020.

For comparison, Tuesday’s number is 33 percent higher than the 9,390 COVID-19 cases reported for the entire month of June. That was the month with the fewest COVID-19 cases reported in Ohio except for March 2020, the month the pandemic began.

Tues-day is also the fifth day during the past seven with cases exceeding 10,000 daily. The only days below 10,000 were Sunday and Monday. Those two days typically have the fewest COVID-19 cases because of a lag in reporting on weekends.

This month is on pace through the first 21 days to have the second-most COVID-19 cases for a month in Ohio since the start of the pandemic.

Only December 2020, which reported 279,317 cases, had more.

The state has had 177,507 COVID-19 cases through the first 21 days of the month, an average of 8,453. That would be more than 262,000 for the full month at that pace, though cases numbers are rising in the past week.

Cortland fire Chief David Rea told city council Monday that he and others met with Trumbull County Health Commissioner Frank Migliozzi and that omicron made up about 3 percent of total cases in some other northeast Ohio counties last week — and now it’s at 50 percent. Delta is still the most common variant in Trumbull County, he said.

“The one thing we do know is that this (omicron) variant is a lot more communicable than the delta,” Rea said.

Omicron is expected really to hit Trumbull County by the beginning of next month, he said.

“Once we have everyone driving and mingling at Christmas, we’ve got a one-week incubation period,” Rea said. “Then starting the first or second week in January, we’re going to see another spike.”

He said: “The hospitals were just inundated with the delta variant. They were just bursting at the seams. First, second week of January, we’re probably going to have the same thing. There’s not much we can do but kind of ride this out and do the best we can.”

The Ohio Department of Health also reported 4,797 people in hospitals in the state Tuesday with COVID-19. Those with COVID-19 counted for 18.4 percent of all hospitalizations in the state Tuesday, according to the ODH.

It is the most COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state for a single day since Dec. 22, 2020, with 4,821, according to the Ohio Hospital Association. The record is 5,308 on Dec. 15, 2020.

There were 3,041 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state a month ago, according to OHA data.

Also, the 1,206 people in Ohio’s intensive care units Tuesday make up 25.82 percent of those in ICU, according to ODH data. The state’s record for most ICU patients with COVID-19 for a day is 1,318 on Dec. 15, 2020, according to the OHA. Tuesday’s total was a decrease of three from Monday.

There were 850 people with COVID-19 in ICU in Ohio a month ago, according to OHA data.

Meanwhile, the Trumbull County Combined Health District will have a COVID-19 vaccination clinic 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Eastwood Mall in Niles.
