CLEVELAND, Ohio — Amazon Prime Day, that annual summertime online shopping frenzy, has been delayed in the United States due to the pandemic, Amazon said.
“In light of COVID-19 and its impact on communities around the world, we have decided to hold Prime Day later than usual this year,” Amazon said in an emailed statement. “We are proud of our associates and all teams worldwide who continue to safely serve our customers and deliver the products they need and want directly to their doorstep.”
A new date has not been announced, but the cyber holiday is expected to happen later this year. Last year’s Prime Day was held in July.
“Over the last five years, Prime Day has become a special celebration and time for Prime members to shop incredible deals for themselves and for friends and family – and it’s something we look forward to every year,” Amazon said. “This year we’ll be holding Prime Day later than usual, while ensuring the safety of our employees and supporting our customers and selling partners.”
Prime members around the world will be able to take part in Prime Day later this year, the statement said. Prime Day in India is Aug. 6-7.
Rumors about a possible Prime Day delay started in April, when an internal Amazon memo leaked that said the event would be pushed back, press reports said.
The first Prime Day was held in 2015, marking the e-commerce giant’s 20th anniversary. The event is a sort of summertime Black Friday, with promotions on numerous gadgets and household items for at least a day.
Last year’s Prime Day started July 15 and lasted for 48 hours, with Amazon offering more than one million deals for Prime members. New deals launched as often as every five minutes, Amazon said.
The event also encourages new customers to sign up for Amazon Prime by offering a 30-day free trial. Prime members pay about $120 annually for special access to music, movies, TV shows and free shipping.
Sales from Prime Day 2019 were larger than its sales for last year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined, Amazon said. Specific sales figures were not revealed. In total, Prime members globally bought more than 175 million items, Amazon said.
In the United States, DNA kits and Instant Pots were the top-selling items in 2019. Laptops, television sets and tops were also popular with American Prime members, CNN reported.
