30 Day Countdown: Day 15 - Where art thou chrome? - UW Dawg Pound

rintongs.blogspot.com

Alright look, I’m just going to say it - Washington’s chrome gold helmets are without question the best helmet that’s sitting in the storage room (or, wherever they keep them) and it’s a shame that they aren’t worn more. Actually, it’s a shame that they aren’t the UW’s main choice at this point.

Before you start throwing your tomatoes and tell me that I have no respect for tradition, I will admit that when Don James and the Huskies were dominating college football - I was unfortunately not around. In fact, the first Husky football that I can recall is when Mason Foster returned an interception for a touchdown after the ball bounced off an Arizona receiver's foot. One of the next memories that come to mind is when Jake Locker and Co. wore black uniforms for the first time in program history during a primetime game against UCLA but truthfully I only really remember that one because I was there and it was really, really cold.

So yeah, even though I was watching UW win the Apple Cup year after year, I wasn’t around for the glory days which in turn does not give me any strong ties to tradition like those who bellowed Go Huskies before me, meaning that while I do love the regular gold helmets, I’d love to see a change and here’s why.

They say when you look good, you feel good, you play good. While it’s catchy, it is far too simple of a line. You know that feeling when you finally make a change to your appearance after having the burning desire to do so? Maybe you trimmed your hair or went with a different style, or perhaps you went and got a new pair of glasses that you feel really suits you. Those are decisions that instill confidence within you so now here you are walking past the mirror more times than usual before you leave the house because you are comfortable with the change you’ve made and you are right about the results. (Hopefully, someone out there relates to this or it’d be a tad bit awkward).

I believe what UW is missing is the satisfaction and confidence that comes with changing up your look. When I’m procrastinating scrolling through Twitter and see a recruit at Husky Stadium trying on the purple and gold, the first thing I check for is to see what helmet they elected to wear. Now I don’t know if this is my bias speaking, but more times than not they are wearing either the gold or purple chrome helmets and I refuse to believe this is a coincidence.

Recruits, like anyone on social media, make posts hoping that they will generate likes. It’s without question that while the normal gold helmet is what’s traditional, they are looking for what’s going to get their post the most interaction which essentially means they have to pick out which uniform combination will garner attention; and we all know that in the college football world, chrome lids are a fast pass to going viral.

So you know what, yeah, it’s time for a change. I want the Huskies to get that haircut that they’ve been contemplating, I want them to get those glasses that they keep searching on google but more importantly, I want them to accept that they have one of the best looking helmets in all of college football so it’s time to add them to the primary uniform.

This is 100% not going to happen, but uh... a man can dream can’t he?
