After a busy Day 1 Friday that featured 36 matches played, the 12-team tournament resumed Saturday morning with a round of doubles. Georgia's team of Erik Grevelius and Thomas Paulsell edged Vanderbilt's Slim Troost and Michael Ross, 8-6, for the Bulldogs' only win of the session. In other action, Miami's Ilarion Danilchenko and Dan Martin defeated Miguel Perez Peña and Britton Johnston, 8-5. Also, the hybrid team of Georgia's Mathis Debru and Auburn's Spencer Gray, who won their first match together Friday, fell, 8-7 (4), to UNC Wilmington's Davide Innocenti and Bekhzod Rasamatov.
In the morning singles round, Grevelius dropped the first set in his match against UNC Charlotte's Mikhail Sokolovskiy, before storming back and prevailing, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Johnston also won a tough three-setter, besting Vandy's Troost, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3, while Debru cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Auburn's Jackson Ross. In other morning singles play, Miami's Martin defeated Perez Peña, 6-4, 6-0.
Thomas Paulsell closed out the morning action by winning a three-set thriller against Jan Galka of Auburn. Paulsell took the opening set, dropped the second in a tiebreaker, and then dominated the tiebreaker in the third, winning 6-3, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (1).
In the afternoon, South Carolina's James Story edged Grevelius, 6-7 (3), 6-0, 7-5, Auburn's Jan Galka bested Perez Peña, 6-1, 6-4, and Furman's Jamie Connel held off in three sets Johnston, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5. Paulsell and Miami's Martin played two tight sets with Martin prevailing 7-6 (10), 7-5. In Georgia's final match of the day, Debru fell to UNC Wilmington's Richard Trey Mallory, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
