Lances Settle Into Middle of Pack After Day One at OBX Intercollegiate

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – A hot-and-cold opening round on day one of the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate left Longwood tied for ninth out of 17 teams in the 54-hole tournament hosted at the Kilmarlic Golf Club.
Sophomore ace Nick Rakes led the way once again for Longwood and sits tied for 14th in the 88-player field, followed by fellow top-25 Lancer Ryan Hammer in 22nd place. Rakes was steady throughout, carding four birdies and 11 pars to finish one-under, while Hammer's early-round surge – which included an eagle on hole 16 – propped him up for an even finish.
That early push from Rakes and Hammer had the Lancers sitting in second place midway through the round, but a challenging back nine throughout the lineup dropped them into the middle of the pack by the final hole. Longwood will enter day two of the tournament tied with North Dakota State with a seven-over 291, trailing eighth-place Villanova by four strokes, and sitting nine strokes away from a top-four placement.
"Unfortunately, we've once again put ourselves in a bit of a tough spot after another sub-par opening round," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. "We played a couple poor holes very early, but I felt like we did a fantastic job of recovering to get right back where we needed to be. Then, to be honest, I'm not sure what happened coming home.
"Staying with it and fighting our way to the house has been one of our strengths all fall, but that mindset left a few of us today. We're going to have to respond and show some of the toughness that I believe we're known for in tomorrow's round. It'll be a challenge, but I know these guys, and I know they'll be up for it."
Pairings for day two of the three-day tournament have Christian Michael hitting first for the Lancers in a 10 a.m. threesome, followed by Scott Jordan (10:09 a.m.), Brendan Dunphy (10:18 a.m.), Ryan Hammer (10:27 a.m.) and Nick Rakes (10:36 a.m.).
