VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team capped off Senior Day with a dominating 3-0 sweep over NJIT Sunday afternoon. Following a tight first set, the Bearcats ran away with the remainder of the match, 25-23, 25-12, 25-16.
Three Bearcats had over 10 kills on the afternoon, with Stefana Stan leading the way with 12. Anna Sprys had 11 kills and Victoria Erwat added 10. All three players hit over .300 on the day. Kiara Adams handed out 31 assists. Binghamton had nine blocks compared to NJIT's one.
The first set proved to be a pivotal one, as BU fought for a tight win. The Bearcats only trailed 4-3 and 5-4, but NJIT tied the frame at 15, and kept it close throughout. A strong 6-2 run, capped by an Adams ace built a cushion, and a final kill by Sprys put the first set in the win column for the Bearcats.
The second set was dominated by Binghamton, as the hosts doubled up the visitors in kills. Sprys came to life late, contributing six kills without an error. Kills by Stan and Sprys finished the set in style, as BU won 25-12.
Erwat had four kills to lead Binghamton in the third set, as the Bearcats maintained a steady advantage throughout. The Highlanders trimmed the lead to 16-13, but a 9-3 run by BU put this one away.
Binghamton's .356 hitting percentage is the best hitting percentage an America East match has seen this season.
Seniors Tyrra Wilson, Emily Rail, Elis Gadelha and Kiara Adams were honored prior to the contest.
BU will hit the road for its final three matches of the season. The team will take on Hartford Friday to kick things off. First swerve is set for 7 p.m.
