Freedom 42, Allentown Central Catholic 7 - Rapid Recap
The Freedom High School football team started the season atop the lehighvalleylive.com Top 10, but slid down to No. 5 after a 3-2 start.
In their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Division game against Allentown Central Catholic at BASD Stadium on Friday night, the Patriots made a serious case to move back up the rankings.
Freedom defeated the top-ranked Vikings 42-7 by forcing three turnovers and blocking a punt in a dominant first half.
Turning point: Freedom’s first possession was a 14-play, 78-yard scoring drive that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brian Taylor to Jalen Fletcher.
The Vikings turned the ball over two plays into their first drive as Pates junior Owen Johnson forced a fumble and senior Joshua Ruela came up with the recovery. Senior running back Deante Crawford scored on a 6-yard touchdown run six plays later.
Both teams traded punts before Central Catholic took over at its own 33.
The Vikings were called for a personal foul on their first play of the drive, and set up to punt 12 yards from their own end zone three plays later. Alexie Sangster blocked Luke Meyers’ punt and Nicholas Ellis recovered the ball in the in the end zone for a Freedom touchdown that gave the Pates a 21-0 lead.
Two plays into Central Catholic’s next drive, Freedom junior Connor Stofanak made a diving interception to set the Patriots up at midfield. Six plays later, Crawford scored his second touchdown on a 4-yard carry.
The Vikings drove into Freedom territory on their next possession before Stofanak intercepted another pass and took it 61 yards down the away sideline for a touchdown.
Top performers: Crawford finished with 106 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.
Stofanak’s pick-6 gave the Pates a 35-0 lead and meant the second half was played with a running clock due to the mercy rule.
Johnson registered a sack along with his forced fumble. The Patriots offensive line of Braelin Moore, Juan Feliciano, Ryan Hoffman, Rayshawn Nicholas and Collin Lutz put in big performance in the trenches.
The Vikings scored in the third quarter when Tamlin Ferguson connected with Jareel Calhoun on a 23-yard touchdown pass.
What it means: Freedom (4-2) picked up another statement victory in the EPC South after its win over Nazareth last week. The Patriots will look to keep their momentum going when they travel to Whitehall.
Central Catholic (4-2) will have to regroup fast as the Vikings will be on the road at Nazareth (4-2) next week.
