Warren, OH. - The Mountain East Conference (MEC) Men's Golf Championships kicked off with day one on Monday as the best that the MEC has to offer gathered at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio. After 18 holes of play in round one, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team sits in seventh place with a score of 340 on day one.
All five of Wheeling's golfers shot under a 90 at the par 72 course, and their top two golfers each finished with scores under 85. The Cardinals have two players ranking in the top 30 as of now, with sophomore Yadhu Urs leading the way in a tie for 19th place and graduate student Hunter Travis tying for 30th in the field. All five of Wheeling's golfers are in the top 40 of the event as the young team is building on their experience from this season.
Urs leads the way shooting an 80 on the first day of the event, finishing eight over par in his tie for 19th place in the field. Urs is tied for fourth in the field with 12 pars on the day and is helping himself out on the par-five holes. The sophomore shot a par on each of the par-five holes on the course, helping to keep his score down and keep him competitive in the field. Urs finished day one +1 on par threes and +7 on par fours.
For Travis, his day one success was helped out by a big birdie, and the fact that he is shooting just +1 on Par 5s and +2 on par threes on the day. Travis is shooting a season-low 83 after the first 18 holes of play and has helped Wheeling secure the seventh spot after day one. The other birdie on the day for Wheeling comes courtesy of Nick Zaller, who is Wheeling's third best golfer shooting an 87 on the day. Zaller is tied for 37th in the field and is just two strokes ahead of the next two best golfers for Wheeling.
Rounding out the day one scoreboard for Wheeling is freshmen Blake Ring-Fish and Alex Parker. Each is competing in their first MEC Championship event, and both are handling the pressure well, shooting an 89 and sitting in a tie for 39th in the field. Ring-Fish is tied with Urs shooting a +7 on the par fours while Parker's best effort is coming on the par 3's where he is shooting +3.
Wheeling currently has a one-stroke lead over Notre Dame College for the seventh spot in the field, and also holds a lead over West Virginia Wesleyan (351) and West Virginia State (465). With 18 more holes set to be played tomorrow, Wheeling is trying to find their way into the top six so that they can move on and play in round three to determine the MEC Champion. They have some work to do, with sixth place Glenville State holding a 23-stroke lead over them, but Wheeling is doing their best to make a splash on day two of the tournament.
Day two of the MEC Men's Golf Championship is set to tee-off tomorrow at Avalon Lakes, with a shotgun start time of noon.
