Warren, OH. - Two rounds have been played at Avalon Lakes, and the Wheeling University Women's Golf team has hung on to their place atop the leader board. They head into day three of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championships with a six-stroke lead over Glenville State, as they hope to secure the program's third Mountain East Conference Championship.
After finishing day one in the top spot on the leader board, junior Emily Holzopfel kept her lead in round two, shooting an 82 on the day. The effort brought her total score to 159 and gives her a five-stroke lead over Lucrezia Speranza of Davis & Elkins. She leads the tournament shooting +1 on the par 5's, is tied for third shooting +10 on par 4's, and is tied for seventh shooting +4 on par 3's. She has been Wheeling's top golfer all season long and is showing that she is one of the best golfers in the entire MEC.
Two of Wheeling's biggest improvements from day one to day two were courtesy of senior Olivia Zampedro and freshman Nicole Lincicome. After finishing third and fourth respectively for Wheeling on day one, both girls have bounced back nicely and are ranked in the top 10 overall. Zampedro dropped her score from 86 on day one to 83 on day two and has a total event score of 169. Lincicome dropped her score nine strokes, going from an 89 on day one to a team-best 80 on day two. She tied for the second-best score of day two and improved her overall score to 169. Zampedro and Lincicome are both tied for ninth in the field, giving Wheeling three golfers ranking in the top 10 overall.
Sitting in fourth place for Wheeling is junior Zoila Herrera, who after shooting an 85 on day one, came back and shot a 90 on day two, bringing her total score to 175. She remained in the top 20 of the event, ranking 16th in the field, and is looking to bounce back on day three of the tournament. Rounding out the field for Wheeling is junior Kylee Tolliver, who had the largest total score improvement from day one to day two of anyone in the entire tournament. After shooting a 99 on day one, Tolliver had a huge comeback on day two, shooting an 86 and bringing her total score to 185. The improvement helped her crack the top 20 of the event, as she is tied for 29th overall.
Head coach Sue Vail is proud of the way her team has performed, and is happy to be in new territory with this year's team.
"We are in new territory this year by being in front after the second day because we are always trying to play catch up," said Vail. "The girls are learning to be a leader and what it means to see it through. I knew I had a good team this year who are very coachable, so the hard work is now paying off."
Wheeling now gets to move to day three of the event, where the 2021 Fall MEC Women's Golf Champion will be crowned. Joining them in the third round of the event will be Glenville State (674), The University of Charleston (700), West Virginia Wesleyan (701), Fairmont State (706), and Davis & Elkins College (710). Wheeling currently possesses a six-stroke lead and hopes to hold on for their third MEC Championship in program history.
Day Three of the MEC Women's Golf Championship is set to tee off tomorrow from Avalon Lakes Country Club. Tee time is scheduled for 10:30 AM.
